Hello 2018,

This year I’m attempting a bi-monthly method of goal setting. I got the idea from Kristen Martin on You Tube (I highly recommend), she makes writing advice videos and is a self-published author of four fantasy books. Well, Kristen uses bi-monthly targets and reports at the end of the period whether she achieved her goals or not.

Monthly goals can be overwhelming and as I mentioned in a previous post, I work full time and have a toddler so I’m willing to try other ways of setting goals in a tangible and achievable way.

So here goes, my goals for January/February 2018. I’ll be back at the end of February to report on whether I achieved them.

  1. Finish first draft of MG Adventure project by end February 2018
  2. Outline first book in MG Contemporary (tween) series by end February 2018
  3. Come up with 3 ideas for NIFCA (What is NIFCA? It’s the National Independence Festival for Creative Arts held in Barbados every year as part of the island’s independence celebrations. I plan to submit three entries – the deadline is usually mid-August. If I’m serious about entering the Literary Arts competition I need a solid plan.
  4. Work on my Twitter pitch for upcoming contests
  5. Participate in Storystorm and blog about it. (What is Storystorm? It’a a month-long story brainstorming event to create 30 story ideas in 30 days.) It’s a great way to build a idea repository for when I’m ready to start a new story I can pull from the list or combine ideas from the list.

The biggest goal here is to finish the first draft of the middle grade adventure novel. I’ve been working on this for soooo long, maybe because I keep going back and revising the beginning. Since I’m planning on querying agents this year, I’ve really got to get to THE END.

I’m at that point where I’m itching to start a new project but I have to see this one through. I’ve learnt so much about writing since I began this novel in 2014 and the story has changed so much since I first got the idea. Now it’s time to make it to the finish line.

How do you set your writing goals?
